Chiropody Services at G.M.C.H. are provided by Catherine McGratton, M.A., B.Sc.(Hons.), D.Pod.M.

Scope of Practice of a Chiropodist
Chiropody deals with the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

Objective of the Chiropody Service
To improve mobility and enhance the independence of individuals by the prevention and management of pathological foot conditions and associated morbidity.

How Is This Achieved?
This is achieved by providing advice on foot health, footwear, orthotic therapy, assessment of foot pathology, identification of treatment plan, referral to other disciplines where appropriate, and provision of direct care as deemed appropriate and agreed to by the individual patient.

What Do You Treat?
The conditions chiropodists treat include those resulting from bone and joint disorders such as arthritis and soft-tissue and muscular pathologies, as well as neurological and circulatory disease. Chiropodists are also able to assess and treat any complications of the above that affect the lower limb, including skin and nail disorders, corns, calluses and ingrown toenails. Foot injuries and infections gained through sport or other activities are also assessed and treated by chiropodists.

Orthotics
Chiropodists are able to assess for orthotics, and measure and order orthotics. Orthotics:

  • Enable the joints and bones of the foot to be in a more stable position for standing and while in motion.
  • Control each phase of the walking cycle, from the moment your heel contacts the ground to when your toes push off the surface.

Other Facts

  • You don’t require a referral from your Doctor to make an appointment
  • $40.00 fee for the service
  • $450.00 for orthotics
  • Footwear advice is also given

Hours of Operation
The chiropodist provides service at three sites - Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Palmerston and District Hospital and Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest. The hours and dates of service at each site vary depending on the needs of the clients. Educational sessions are scheduled periodically.
