Groves Memorial Community Hospital Emergency Department provides treatment to more than 26,000 people every year.

What can I expect when I arrive?
Every patient who comes to the Emergency Department is initially seen - or triaged - by a registered nurse. Patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries are taken into the treatment area immediately. Critically ill and trauma patients are sometimes transferred to the trauma centres in either London, Toronto or Hamilton.

Will I have to wait?
This depends on a number of factors including how ill you are, the availability of treatment rooms, number of patients waiting, etc. Critically ill patients are given priority therefore you may find that others who arrived after you are cared for first.

Despite the fact that additional doctors and nurses are called in during very busy periods, there are still limits to the number of health care personnel available. This can sometimes result in lengthy waits. On ocassion, it is necessary to perform tests or call in a specialist which may lead to an additional wait.

Please be assured however that the staff are committed to ALL our patients. Should you have any questions or if your condition changes during this waiting period do not hesitate to approach the nurse in charge.

What about friends and family?
We realize a visit to the Emergency Department can be a very anxious and distressing time. Friends and family are welcome to stay, however, limiting visitors to a maximum one at a time would be very much appreciated.

Vending machines are located just inside the Emergency entrance. If you are a patient please check with the nurse before you have anything to eat or drink.

What if I have to be admitted to the Hospital?
If you need to be admitted we will do our best to locate a bed as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it is sometimes necessary to remain in the Emergency Department for a period of time until an appropriate bed is available.

Beds are assigned according to severity of illness and space availability on specialized units.
